Picea glauca - Tolerant of most weather and soil conditions. Useful as a specimen, mass planting, hedge or windbreak. Native. A 50′ spruce tree requires a staggering amount of water. While the myth is that spruce roots burrow deep enough to pull moisture from the depths, the truth is that most collecting roots are within 30 cm of the surface. Spruce roots are very powerful, as anyone with a basement next to them can tell you. Average growth rates may be only 3 to 4 inches per year on young trees, but may increase to 12 inches per year on good sites or with irrigation. Prune in June. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once a week for about 20-30 minutes whether is rains or not. Plant at least 3-4 feet from any foundation.
