$15.99
Tillandsia, or air plants, are low-maintenance, soil-free epiphytes that absorb water and nutrients through specialized leaf hairs called trichomes. They require bright, indirect light, good airflow, and regular watering by misting or soaking (10-15 minutes). They are excellent for vertical decor, terrariums, and hanging displays.
Key Care & Requirements
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight is best, such as near east or west-facing windows.
- Watering: Soak plants for 10-15 minutes once a week, or mist thoroughly 2-3 times per week. Green-leafed varieties need more frequent watering, while silver-leafed varieties are more drought-tolerant.
- Drying: Crucial: After watering, dry them upside down in a bright, airy space for 1–3 hours to prevent rot.
- Environment: They thrive in high humidity and warm temperatures (50–90°F).
- Fertilizer: Use a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer monthly during the growing season.
Common Varieties & Features
- Tillandsia ionantha: Small, popular, and often turns bright red before blooming.
- Tillandsia juncea: Tall, grass-like, great for vertical arrangements.
- Tillandsia xerographica: Known for its large, silvery, curly leaves.
Tips for Success
- If tips turn brown, they can be trimmed, or the plant may need higher humidity.
- They are susceptible to rot if allowed to stay wet; ensure good air circulation.
- They bloom once, then produce "pups" (offsets) which can be separated once they are about 1/3 the size of the parent plant.
