10” Pot

The Iochroma (pronounced eye-oh-KRO-ma) is a genus of about 34 species of fast-growing, tropical shrubs and small trees in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Native to the forests of South America—particularly Peru and Ecuador—these plants are closely related to tomatoes, potatoes, and Angel's Trumpets(Brugmansia).
Key Features
  • Flowers: Known as "Mini Angel's Trumpets" or "Violet Tubeflowers," they produce heavy clusters of tubular, pendulous flowers in shades of purple, blue, red, yellow, or white.
  • Wildlife Appeal: The nectar-rich flowers are a major magnet for hummingbirds and bees.
  • Foliage: They feature large, velvety, dull-green leaves that add a lush, tropical feel to a garden.
  • Growth: In frost-free areas, they can quickly reach 8 to 12 feet tall and wide.

Care and Growing Conditions
  • Hardiness: Typically suitable for USDA zones 8–10. They are not frost-hardy and will die back to the ground if temperatures drop below 35°F (2°C), though they often resprout in spring.
  • Light: They thrive in full sun in cooler coastal regions but benefit from afternoon shade in hot inland climates where temperatures exceed 85°F (29°C).
  • Water: Requires regular, consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist; they do not tolerate standing water or being bone-dry.
  • Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic (pH around 5.5 to 6.0).
  • Maintenance:
    • Pruning: Crucial for managing their vigorous growth and encouraging more flowers, as they bloom on new wood.
    • Feeding: Use a balanced organic fertilizer (like 10-10-10) every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.

Popular Species and Varieties
  • Iochroma cyaneum: The most common species, featuring deep violet-blue flowers. Popular cultivars include 'Royal Queen' and 'Sky King'.
  • Iochroma fuchsioides (Red Iochroma):Known for its striking scarlet-red or orange-red tubular blooms.
  • Iochroma grandiflorum: A rarer variety with larger purple flowers.

⚠️ Safety Warning
Every part of the Iochroma plant is toxic if ingested by humans or pets. It contains alkaloids and hallucinogenic compounds similar to its relative, the Angel's Trumpet. Symptoms of poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
