Cut the branches back by about one-third their total length. This fire light hydrangea tolerates a wide range of conditions, but does not grow well in soggy soil. Plant in full sun in zones 3-7; afternoon shade is preferable in warmer areas. A good 2-3" (5-7.6 cm) layer of shredded bark mulch over the roots is very beneficial.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘SMHPFL’ - The blooms emerge white and then age to a vivid red. Strong stems hold up well in the landscape. A real show off in the garden! Hydrangeas have shallow root systems – this means that their roots do not grow deep, but rather broadly, they remain close to the ground surface. They grow about 2' per year. Prune in spring. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once or twice a week for about 20-30 minutes whether it rains or not.
Zone 3. 1.75m W x 125cm-stem H. Patio tree. No fruit. White to red flowers on green foliage turning yellow in the fall. Full sun to part shade. Moist, well drained soil. 125cm #7.
