Hoya carnosa 'Albo' (often referred to as Hoya carnosa 'Albomarginata' or sometimes affectionately as 'Albo') is a popular, trailing, or climbing houseplant known for its thick, succulent leaves and striking variegated foliage, where the white variegation is located on the edges of the leaves. It is part of the classic "wax plant" family, valued for its fragrant, star-shaped flowers and easy-care nature.
Key Characteristics & Care
  • Appearance: Leaves are deep green with creamy-white margins. It is a vigorous grower that can be trained to climb a trellis or allowed to trail in a hanging basket.
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant variegation. It can tolerate some direct sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf burn.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out significantly between waterings. It is best to water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry or when the leaves start to look slightly wrinkled.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining, airy, and chunky mix. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal.
  • Flowers: Produces clusters of white to light pink, highly fragrant, star-shaped flowers (often described as having a honey-like scent).
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, with pruning allowed to maintain a compact shape.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable temperatures, ideally between 20C-24C
As with many variegated plants, the white areas lack chlorophyll, meaning they may grow slightly slower than all-green varieties (like the standard
