Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster’ - This thornless locust has an upright vase-shaped form that lends itself well to pruning for a street tree. Fast growing. Small leaves do not produce a lot of shade. They are deep rooted with a widely spreading and profusely branched root system and a strong tap root. It grows about 2' per year. Prune in spring. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once or twice a week for about 20-30 minutes whether it rains or not.

Zone 4. 11m W x 15m H. Vase with rounded top form with no fruit. No flowers. Medium green foliage turning yellow in the fall. Full sun. Adaptable soil.

Attracts pollinators. Deer resistant.
