The Ficus Tineke (Ficus elastica 'Tineke'), commonly known as the
Variegated Rubber Plant, is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant admired for its striking foliage, which features a variegated blend of dark green, light green, cream, and pink hues. Native to Southeast Asia, this tropical evergreen is prized for its glossy, thick, leathery leaves that can add dramatic color to indoor spaces.
Key Characteristics & Care
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, which is crucial for maintaining its vibrant variegation. Too little light can lead to fading, while direct sunlight can burn the leaves.
- Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. It is drought-tolerant but prone to root rot if overwatered.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining potting mix, often enhanced with perlite or coarse sand.
- Temperature & Humidity: Prefers temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C) and appreciates higher humidity levels, though it adapts well to average home conditions.
- Size: Indoors, it can reach 3 to 10 feet tall, often growing in a bushy or upright habit.
- Toxicity: The plant is toxic to pets (cats/dogs) if ingested.
Common Issues
- Brown Spots/Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering, leading to root issues.
- Leaf Drop: Can indicate under-watering or sudden changes in light/temperature.
- Pests: Occasionally attracts scale or mealybugs.
Note: The Ficus Tineke is sometimes mistaken for the Ficus 'Ruby,' which has more pronounced reddish-pink tones compared to the cream-white variegation of the Tineke.
