Barrel cactus (primarily
Ferocactus and Echinocactusgenera) are iconic, slow-growing, spherical to cylindrical desert succulents native to Southwestern North America and Mexico. Known for their stout, ribbed, and heavily spined appearance, they produce yellow, red, or purple flowers at the top. They are popular, low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and fire-resistant xeriscape plants.
Key Characteristics and Care
    • Appearance: They grow in a barrel shape, ranging from small to large (some reach over 6 feet), covered in long, often vibrant, sharp spines.
    • Flowers and Fruit: Mature plants produce flowers, typically in spring or summer, which turn into edible, yellow-greenish fruits
      .
  • Light/Water: They require full sun (6+ hours) and well-draining sandy or rocky soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry, significantly reducing water during winter dormancy.
  • Temperature: While desert-adapted, they prefer protection from extreme winter freezes, with ideal temperatures between 5C - 40C.
  • They are generally low-maintenance but can be susceptible to mealybugs and, if overwatered, root rot.
