Betula nigra Heritage ('Cully') - A vigorous tree with light brown to creamy -white bark. Good resistance to Bronze Birch Borer. The bark can exfoliate on young trunks. A superior birch cultivar. The root system is variable in structure by the site, but trees usually develop extensive lateral roots. Although the root system is usually shallow, roots may penetrate over 5 feet in depth when grown on deep, loamy or sandy-loamy soils. Very slow growing. Prune in spring. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once a week for about 20-30 minutes whether is rains or not. Plant at least 3-4 feet from any foundation.

Zone 4. 9m x 13m. Small nutlet fruit with catkin like flowers. Pyramidal to oval shape. Glossy, dark green foliage turning yellow in the fall. Full sun to part shade. Adaptable, acidic soil.

Attracts birds. Deer resistant.
