Winterberry 'Winter Red'
Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite' - Every fall, these deciduous Winter Reds develop vibrant red berries that pop against the green foliage and stay throughout the season, even after the leaves drop. They glow in the landscape, providing bursts of color in the empty winter countryside. New growth emerges dark burgundy in the spring before maturing to signature green, imparting further visual interest. Slow growing. Shallow root system. Prune in spring. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once a week for about 20-30 minutes whether is rains or not. Plant at least 3-4 feet from any foundation. This shrub has a shallow lateral root system. Very slow growing. Needs a pollinator like Southern Gentleman.
Zone 4. 2m x 2m. Upright, rounded shape. White flowers in May. Red fruit. Green foliage turning yellow in the fall. Full sun to part shade. Adaptable soil.
Attracts pollinators. Deer resistant.
