Summersweet ‘Sixteen Candles’
Clethra alnifolia 'Sixteen Candles' - A deciduous shrub with ornamental features. Plant a few of these in a naturalized area, especially near a stream or water garden. Sixteen Candles would also look outstanding in that shady spot in your yard where you'd like a splash of color. Your Sixteen Candles will amaze you with its 6-inch long spikes of delicate blossoms that reach out amid the dark green foliage in mid-to late summer. The pristine white flowers are variable in orientation, with some gently arching, upright or horizontal. The root system is fibrous on the surface but deep tap roots. Very slow growing. Prune in spring. Use Bone Meal when you first plant. Do not fertilize the first year. Fertilize once a year with a balanced granular fertilizer. Do not plant any deeper than it is in the pot. Do not add any soil or mulch around the base of the stem. Water deeply once a week for about 20-30 minutes whether is rains or not. Plant at least 3-4 feet from any foundation.
Zone 3. 1m W x 1m W. Upright, horizontal shape. White flowers in July to August. Capsule fruit on dark green foliage turning yellow in the fall. Full sun to part shade. Adaptable soil.
Attracts all pollinators. Deer resistant.
