Portulacaria afra variegata is a beautiful shrubby plant with mahogany-colored stems that are accented by highly succulent creamy yellow leaves with green midstripes. The habit of this form differs from the upright stance of elephant bush in that it is somewhat cascading and spreads quickly laterally, rather than vertically. Often used as a bonsai subject, as the stems are easily trained and the contrast of the gnarly mahogany stems with the delicate round colorful leaves creates an enticing ambiance. Great as hanging basket in an atrium or for a patio, or as a gracefully cascading bonsai. It also makes for one of the prettiest filler or spiller plants you'll ever see in mixed succulent arrangements. Like the all-green-foliage version, this softer-looking form features mahogany red stems and tolerates neglect and dry conditions, if hot sun less so. Great as a hanging plant on your patio or inside a bright room. A tough, hard-to-kill, easy-to-please charmer for your home and patio decor. Grows to 2 ft. to 3 ft. H and 3 ft. W. Plant in well-draining soil. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Provide full sun to bright, indirect light. Flowers in summer, although rarely. Hardy to Zone 10/36°F.
