Talk about a stand-out plant! The Calathea lancifolia, more commonly known as the Rattlesnake Calathea, is a unique plant with its elongated, wavy leaves and medium green tone. As if that is not enough, the darker oval colourations throughout the leaves give it a snakeskin appearance. The eccentric beauty is rounded out with the classic Calathea leaf undersides, which are deep purple.

These plants tend to be lower-growing plants commonly found as ground cover in a jungle. Like prayer plants (maranta), these plants also move their leaves in a praying hands method throughout the day. It is awesome to see their leaves in different positions in the morning and at night! These plants can be difficult to get the hang of, so be sure to read the water and light requirements in the other tabs!

Pet lovers will be happy to know that these plants are non-toxic. But please don't let cute little Midnight nibble these beautiful leaves!

People with lower light settings will be happy to know that this plant prefers lower light settings. Direct light is a no-no, medium light is best, but they also do well in lower light. In its natural habitat, this plant is often shaded by taller plants/trees.

Calathea plants like to be consistently moist (not wet!). If the plant dries out too much, then it can result in pests. I like to give these plants a bit of water frequently, as opposed to drenching them and allowing them to dry out. Important: These plants tend to be sensitive to water with chemicals and minerals. Tap water may cause these plants to get brown tips. If possible, water your plant with rain water, filtered water or water that has been standing for at least 24 hours. It is also important to water them with room temperature water. Try not to get water on their leaves as this can result in fungal issues. Note: Be sure not to let the plant sit in pooled water as that can cause root rot.
